Scaling Down

During my school days, the place to get your music fix - there were no streaming or Limewire back then - was to get physical tapes or CD from the shops. And one of the best one was located at Sungai Wang Plaza.

Always blaring with loud music, Victoria Music Centre always have a selected of the old and new. Anything you wanted to listen to, chances are you would find it there. And the staffs there really knew their music. Before the clampdown on pirated tapes, you can even by mixtapes there, just come along with a list of songs that you want transferred and viola, you come back the next day and it would be on a cassette.

Many music stores are closing lately - Tower Records had already wind down - and it looked like Victoria would be suffering the same fate. The store floor space was halved a couple of years ago and while I was walking at the mall the other Sunday, I caught a notice that the shop and maybe the chain would be closing soon as well ....

Streaming had made music more accessible and clearly brick and mortar stores are the thing of the past ...
